- WHAT IS QUICK MEMO REMINDER?
-
- QMR is a hassle-free calendar program. If you manage
- projects, or if you forget birthdays or appointments, you
- will find QMR indispensable. When you turn on your
- computer, QMR reminds you of the dates you entered in your
- calendar. You choose how often QMR reminds you--either
- daily, weekly, or monthly. QMR is non-intrusive and so will
- not interrupt you while you are working with other
- applications.
-
- After you install QMR and edit your AUTOEXEC batch file,
- QMR will run each time you boot up. Depending on how you set
- QMR'S defaults, it will either remind you of your
- appointments or continue with the rest of the AUTOEXEC
- commands. QMR adds less than 1/2 second of time to your system
- boot ups.

- WHO CAN USE THIS SHAREWARE VERSION OF QMR? FOR HOW LONG?

- QMR has been distributed using the ShareWare concept.
- For more information about Shareware, see page 30 in this
- manual. Non-registered users are granted use of this
- software for a limited trial period. You should know within
- a short time whether or not you want to keep QMR in your
- software library. If you keep this software and use it, you
- are expected to register it.

- HOW DO YOU INSTALL QMR?
-
- You can use QMR with either a hard drive or a floppy
- drive. QMR comes with installation batch files for both
- hard drives and floppy disks. You can, if you choose, use
- your own method for installing QMR, but the following
- methods are fast and easy:
-
- To install QMR on a hard disk:
-
- 1. With the QMR disk inserted in drive A, type
- HDINSTAL followed by a drive letter without a
- colon. For example, if you want to install QMR
- on your C drive, type HDINSTAL C at A:\.
- Instructions will appear on your screen.
-
- Note: If you type a colon after the drive
- letter, HDINSTAL will not run correctly.
-
- HDINSTAL creates a directory named QMR on
- the drive you specified and copies QMR's files
- to the directory.
-
- 2. Add the following commands near the beginning
- of your AUTOEXEC.BAT file:
-
- CD\QMR
- QS
- CD\
-
- To install QMR on a floppy disk:
-
- 1. Insert a formatted empty disk in your B drive
- and the QMR disk in your A drive.
-
- 2. Type FLINSTAL at the prompt. Instructions will
- appear on your screen.
-

- HOW DO YOU USE QMR?
-
- QMR consists of two programs: QE.EXE and QS.EXE.
- QE.EXE is the filename of the QMR_EDIT program; you use this
- program to add, edit, and delete memos and to set QMR's
- defaults. QS.EXE is the filename of the QMR_SHOW program;
- it reminds you of current memos.

- HOW DO YOU USE QMR_EDIT?
-
- To load QMR_EDIT, at the DOS prompt type QE and press
- ENTER. You will see the QMR registration screen. It
- appears only in the ShareWare version. To continue, press
- any key.
-

- WHAT'S ON THE QMR_EDIT SCREEN?
-
- Across the top of the screen is a command line with
- five options: Order, Add, Delete, DeFault, and Edit. The
- command line is visible in all of QMR_EDIT's screens except
- the registration screen. The highlight in the command line
- serves two purposes: In the QMR_EDIT screen, it marks the
- option you select; in other screens, such as the Add screen,
- it identifies which option you are using.
-
- Across the bottom of the screen is a two-line status
- bar that is displayed in every screen except the
- registration screen. The top line lists functions, today's
- date, and the present time. You'll want to correct the date
- and time if they are incorrect.
-
- The second line of the status bar is a help line for the
- current screen. It includes reminders of what the selected
- option does, copyright information, and the program's name
- and version.
-

-
- HOW DO YOU SELECT OPTIONS FROM THE QMR_EDIT SCREEN?
-
- To move the highlight and select an option from the
- command line, use any of these three methods:
-
- 1. Press the left- or right-arrow keys to
- highlight an option and press ENTER, or
-
- 2. Press the space bar to highlight an option and
- press ENTER, or
-
- 3. Press the capitalized letter of the desired
- option.
-
- To select a function from the status bar, press the
- appropriate key. This is what happens when you press:
-
- F1 A help screen explains the options listed at the
- top of the QMR_EDIT screen. To exit, press ESC.
-

- F2 QMR_EDIT lets you decide what color each part of
- the screen will be. A related function,
- Shadows, is in the DeFault option. Detailed
- instructions and hints for changing colors
- are in the next section.

- F3 Information about registering QMR is displayed.
-
- Q Exits QMR_Edit and returns you to DOS.
-

- HOW DO YOU CHANGE QMR'S COLORS?
-
- QMR lets you select from 128 color combinations for each
- of six areas on QMR's screens. That's 4,398,046,511,104
- possible combinations. One of them should be just your cup
- of tea.
-
- To change colors:
-
- 1. Press F2 from the QMR_EDIT screen. The screen
- that appears shows the current color settings
- on the left half of the screen. In the right
- half are the choices you have.
-
- 2. To select the area you want to change, press
- the up- or down-arrow keys to move the
- highlight in the box.
-
- 3. To change the colors, press these function
- keys:
-
- F1 Changes the foreground color to a lower
- color value.
-
- F2 Changes the foreground color to a higher
- color value.
-
- F3 Changes the background color to a lower
- color value.
-
- F4 Changes the background color to a higher
- color value.
-
- The color values are displayed directly
- above the date. The upper value shows the
- color combination and its number. The lower
- value also shows the color number, but not the
- colors because some color combinations will not
- show, for example, black on black.
-

- 4. To select the current color, press ENTER.

- 5. To save the changes you make, press S. The
- QMR_EDIT screen reappears.
-
- 6. To return to QMR's "factory" colors, press C.
- If you have a monochrome monitor, press M. The
- QMR_EDIT screen reappears.
-

- WHAT SUGGESTIONS DO YOU HAVE FOR CHANGING THE SCREEN COLORS?
-
- Here are some hints for successful color combinations:
-
- -- The highlight background color should contrast
- with both its foreground color and with the
- copyright color.
-
- -- The copyright foreground color should be
- different from both the command line foreground
- color and the highlight foreground color so the
- capital letters in the options are clear.
-
- -- The time and date line background color should
- be different than the highlight foreground
- color.
-
- -- Your mesh background and foreground colors can
- be the same. This will cause the mesh to
- disappear.
-
- -- The background colors for everything except the
- highlight can be the same. This will make the
- bars behind the command and status lines
- disappear.
-
- -- One of QMR's guinea pigs changed her screens
- radically from the factory settings. Here are
- the settings if you want to try them out:
-
- Highlight Color: 112, black on gray
- Command Line: 15, white on black
- Mesh: 0, black on black
- Help Colors: 7, gray on black
- Copyright Color: 9, blue on black (or try
- 2, 4, 5, 10, 12, 13 or 14)
- Time and Date Line: 7, gray on black

- WHAT DOES THE ORDER OPTION DO?
-
- When you select the Order option, ORDER.EXE runs, prompts
- you for information, calculates prices, and prints an invoice.
-
-
-
- HOW DO YOU ADD MEMOS TO QMR?
-
- Here's how to add memos:
-
- 1. Select the Add option from the QMR_EDIT
- command line.
-
- 2. Using the arrow keys, highlight the date
- field. Type the date, using 2 digits for the
- month, 2 digits for the day, and 4 digits for
- the year. When the date is complete, the
- highlight automatically moves to the memo
- field.
-
- Valid Dates:
-
- Valid dates range from 1/1/1600 to 12/1/3000.
- You probably won't find much use for either
- end of the range.
-
- Spaces are not valid characters, so use zeros
- instead. For example, for January 3, 1990,
- type 01/03/1990.
-
- You may use asterisks (*) in dates as wild
- card characters.
-
- If you entered these dates, their equivalents
- would be:
-
- 12/05/**** = December 5, Any Year
- **/**/1998 = Any Month, Any Day, 1998
- **/**/**** = Any Month, Any Day, Any Year
-
- If you enter invalid months, days, or
- years, QMR will interpret them to be
- current. For example:
-
- 44/12/0000 = This Month, 12, This Year
-
- 3. Type your memo in the memo field. You can
- toggle between insert and overwrite modes by
- pressing the INS key. To move the highlight
- when you are done typing the memo, press ENTER.
-

- Deleting Memos ------------- 12
-
-
- You can type up to 70 characters and
- spaces in the memo field. If you fill the
- field completely, the highlight automatically
- moves to the delete field.
-
- 4. To delete a memo after you view it, type T. To
- keep a memo in your calendar, type F. The
- highlight automatically moves to the Song field
- after you type your choice.
- The Delete Message Override default can
- affect the memos you mark for deletion. For
- information about using this default, see the
- defaults section on page 13.
-
- 5. To select the song you want played when you
- view the memo, press + or - or the space bar.
- You may choose between these four songs:
-
- BIRTHDAY -- Happy Birthday
- CHIMES -- Other chimes
- BEEP -- Quick beeping
- NONE -- Silence
-
- Note: If the Songs DeFault is set to OFF, the
- songs you select will not play. See the
- DeFaults section on page 13.
-
- 6. To save the memo, press CTRL-ENTER. The
- QMR_EDIT screen reappears.
-
- 7. To abort the memo, press ESC. The QMR_EDIT
- screen reappears.
-

- HOW DO YOU DELETE MEMOS?
-
- QMR will delete memos two ways. The first way is to
- select T for the delete option when you add a memo. When
- QMR_SHOW reminds you of a memo, you can choose to delete
- it at that time. The second way you can delete memos from
- QMR_EDIT is by following these steps:
-
- 1. Select the Delete option from the QMR_EDIT
- screen. The memos saved in QMR.DAT are
- displayed on the screen in date order.
-
- 2. Highlight a memo you want to delete by using
- these keys:
-
- HOME: Moves the highlight to the first memo
-
-

- END: Moves the highlight to the last memo

- Page Up: Moves the highlight up 6 memos
-
- Page Down: Moves the highlight down 6 memos

- Arrows: Move the highlight up or down one memo

- 3. To delete the highlighted memo, press ENTER.
- QMR_EDIT will ask you to press Y if you want to
- delete the memo. If you want to save the memo,
- press any key except Y.

- 4. To return to the QMR_EDIT screen, press ESC.

- HOW DO YOU SET THE DEFAULTS?
-
- The default options allow you to control QMR_SHOW, your
- memos, and the appearance of QMR's boxes. Here's how to set
- the defaults:
-
- 1. Select the DeFault option from the QMR_EDIT
- command line.
-
- 2. To change settings, use any of these methods:
-
- To move the highlight,
-
- -- Press the up- or down-arrow keys, or
- -- Press the space bar.

- To toggle the setting of the highlighted
- default,

- -- Press ENTER, or

- WHAT DOES EACH DEFAULT SETTING DO?
-
- These five defaults let you customize QMR to suit your
- needs:
-
- Songs are: ON -- QMR_SHOW plays the song attached to each
- memo.
-
- OFF -- QMR_SHOW does not play songs.
-
- Delete Message Override: ON -- QMR_SHOW prevents deletion
- of memos, regardless of how
- you marked them for
- deletion.
-
- OFF -- QMR_SHOW allows you to
- delete marked memos after
- you view them.
-
- Check DWM by: DAILY Basis -- QMR_SHOW checks for and
- displays current memos daily
- (today +/- 2 days).
-
- WEEKLY Basis -- QMR_SHOW checks for and
- displays current memos weekly
- (today + 7 and - 4 days).
-
- MONTHLY Basis -- QMR_SHOW checks for and
- displays current memos monthly
- (today + 30 and - 7 days).
-
- View Memos: Once -- QMR_SHOW checks for and displays
- current memos only once.
-
- Always -- QMR_SHOW checks for and displays
- current memos each time you boot up or
- run QMR_SHOW.
-
- Shadows: ON -- The shadows behind the boxes in QMR's screens
- are displayed, creating a 3-D effect.
-
- OFF -- The boxes in QMR's screens are displayed
- without shadows.

- HOW DO YOU EDIT MEMOS?
-
- QMR_EDIT allows you to correct and change memos you
- added previously. Here's how to change memos:
-
- 1. Select the Edit option from the QMR_EDIT screen.
- Your memos are listed in chronological order.
-
- 2. To highlight a memo, use these keys:
-
- HOME: Moves the highlight to the first memo
-
- END: Moves the highlight to the last memo
-
- Page Up: Moves the highlight up 6 memos
-
- Page Down: Moves the highlight down 6 memos
-
- Arrows: Move the highlight up or down one memo
-
- 3. To select the highlighted memo, press ENTER.
- The memo appears in a screen that looks like the
- Add screen.
-
- Note: When you select a memo for editing, QMR_EDIT
- changes the Song to NONE. If you want a
- song attached, edit the Song, too.
-
- 4. Edit your memo using the same cursor movements
- you used when you added the memo.
-
- 5. To save the edited memo, press CTRL-ENTER. The
- edit screen reappears. The memos are resorted
- by date.
-
- 6. To abort the edit and keep the original memo,
- press ESC. The edit screen reappears.

- 7. To exit the edit screen, press ESC. The
- QMR_EDIT screen reappears.

- HOW DO YOU VIEW YOUR MEMOS?
-
- If you installed QMR on our hard drive and edited your
- AUTOEXEC.BAT file, QMR_SHOW will run each time you boot up.
-
- If you leave your computer on most of the time, you can
- run QMR_SHOW by typing QS at the DOS prompt. If you forget
- to run QMR_SHOW, you might not get your memos on time,
- though QMR will show you all the memos it hasn't shown you
- yet.
-
- If your computer does not have an internal clock, add
- the date and time commands just before you run QMR_SHOW. To
- use QMR without an internal clock, type these commands at
- the DOS prompt:
-
- CD\QMR
- TIME
- DATE
- QS
- CD\

- DID YOU PAY FOR THE DISK CONTAINING THE SHAREWARE VERSION OF QMR?
-
- If you received QMR from a company such as PC-SIG,
- Public Brand Software, or any distribution center that
- charged you for the disk containing this software, you are
- NOT a registered user. You still have to register with
- Triple-T Software if you intend to keep QMR in your software
- library.
-
- Any distribution company that leads you to believe that
- you are purchasing a registered program and sends you a
- ShareWare program instead is being unethical. If that happens
- to you, send your name, address, and the name of the distributor

- WHY SHOULD YOU REGISTER QMR?

- If you want to keep and use QMR, you should register it.
- Aside from the legal aspects, registering QMR makes good
- things happen for everyone. Some of these good things are:

- 1. You get a much better version of QMR, a better
- manual, and telephone support. Details about some
- of the improvements follow shortly.

- 2. You get added to Triple-T Software's mailing list.
-
- 3. Triple-T Software can stay in business producing
- wonderful programs like QMR and SoftSet, programs
- that are as good or better than commercial software
- but cost less.

- 4. The ShareWare concept will stay healthy, providing
- you with an easy way to get great, inexpensive
- software that you can try out before you buy.

- WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE SHAREWARE AND REGISTERED
- VERSIONS OF QMR?

- Registered versions of QMR have some features not found
- in the ShareWare version. Registered features include:

- date, memo, deletion status, or song

- -- Find and Find Next features that allow you to locate
- instantly any memo entry by date, memo, deletion
- status, or song
- -- A multiple calendar feature that allows you to
- have separate calendars for individuals, for
- projects, or for special occasions. QMR's ShareWare
- version has only one calendar

- version allows only 40 entries

- HOW DO YOU REGISTER?

- You can register three ways:

- 1. Select Order from the QMR_EDIT screen. Fill out
- the order form on your screen and print it, OR

- 2. Run ORDER.EXE from DOS, or

- HOW DOES QMR WORK?

- If you are interested in the logic that QMR uses and
- you don't mind some computer lingo, read this section.
-
- QMR consists of two programs. QMR_EDIT (QE.EXE) is the
- program you use to add, edit, or delete memos. QMR_SHOW
- (QS.EXE) is the program that notifies you of any current
- memos. QS.EXE is the program you need to reference in your
- AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
-
- QMR is an AUTOEXEC batch file "ticker" program, not a
- terminate and stay resident "tickler" program. QMR will not
- intrude on other applications. "Ticker" is a new term
- coined by Triple-T Software. Remember, you saw it here
- first!

- QMR_SHOW runs only when you boot up or load it. It
- reminds you of current memos; if no memos are current,
- QMR_SHOW unloads automatically. QMR only adds 1/2 second of
- time to your system boot ups.

- Here is how QMR_SHOW works:

- First, it checks a file called QMR.FLG for its default
- settings (this file is created by QMR_SHOW).
-
- Second, QMR_SHOW checks the current system date against
- the date QMR_SHOW was last run; at the same time, QMR_SHOW
- updates the flag file. If any memos are current, QMR_SHOW
- displays them, prompting you to delete memos you tagged for
- deletion. If no memos are current, QMR_SHOW briefly
- displays a "no memos due" message and unloads itself.
